Funeral Reception Form

Eulogies During Mass

ALOYSIUS CARDINAL AMBROZIC

ARCHBISHOP OF TORONTO

(excerpt from the Decree regarding Eulogies at Funerals by the archbishop of Toronto)

Laity speaking at Funeral Masses (revised, January 17, 2006)

Christian words of remembrance are not necessary and not recommended. It is imperative that this be communicated to the family of the deceased. However, if the family members insist, they are permitted by the pastor under the following conditions:

§1 The words of remembrance may take place either

a. at the vigil liturgy, or

b. at the beginning of the Funeral Liturgy, after the reception of the body and prior to the opening prayer of the Mass, or

c. at the committal liturgy at the graveside, or

d. at a reception following the funeral liturgy.

§2 Only one person may speak.

§3 A time limit of 3-5 minutes.

§4 It is expected that the talk should be written out like a script; should it prove too emotional for the designated speaker, someone else could perform this role. The talk is to be shown beforehand to the priest or a member of the pastoral staff. This is important to ensure the comments are appropriate and not contrary to Catholic teaching.
